Walking for Physical and Mental Fitness

Clarence by Laszlo                                                       Carol by Clarence

Carol has been walking since her college days, which was a major factor in bringing us together. I loved that she would keep biking up a hill when the going got really hard.

We now walk indoors and out.

We walk outdoors early and late, and indoors during the day, getting up and moving around periodically.

Weekends, we walk all over, from a huge park in the heart of Albuquerque to open spaces all over New Mexico.

Walking makes us feel better and more productive in whatever we are doing.

Good examples are sitting behind a desk or working at the computer. We are more productive if we get up and walk around from time to time.

For those who don't exercise, walking is a good way to start. You'll notice the difference in how you feel right away, more productive in whatever you do.

If you train but don't walk, give it a try. You'll feel better and recover faster.

That brings us to a new study reviewed in the October 26, 2023 issue of Longevity Magazine.

An international team of researchers led by Julia Kettinen, a Doctoral Researcher in Sports and Exercise Medicine at the Institute of

Biomedicine, University of Eastern Finland, and published in BMJ Open Sports & Exercise Medicine, found that rounds of golf, Nordic

walking and just plain walking improved cognitive functions in healthy older adults.

Longevity Magazine emphasized that that all three forms of walking "significantly improved immediate cognitive function." There was no delay; improved cognitive function was practically instantaneous.

That has been my experience. When I'm having trouble figuring something out, the answer comes to me in a block or two. I've related this several times on line and in our books.

If you are having brain lock, "go for a walk." You'll be surprised how quickly the way out comes to you.

Walking is good for both your body and your mind.

Take it from Carol and me, you'll feel better, be more productive and healthier, if you make walking a regular part of your life.

If you have health problems, talk to your doctor before taking up walking. In most cases, he or she will say "Right on."
