Any Activity Helps Prevent Stroke This finding interests me because a stroke took the life of my father. Makes me wonder if walking or some other physical activity would have postponed his stroke. As a teenager I parked my motor bike behind his office, and then walked a few blocks to my junior high school. Later on I walked through downtown Albuquerque to my high school on the other side of the railroad tracks. Now, that was a long walk. I wasn't walking for health, but it taught me that walking agrees with me. Carol was walking long before we met and frequently walks with me. We enjoy walking and know it is good for us. Let's look at the study which found that any activity is better than none for stroke prevention. More is, of course, better. Researchers from Italy, the UK, and Germany analyzed 15 prior studies involving more than 750,000 subjects and found that all levels of "leisure-time physical activity" can reduce the risk of stroke. Leisure-time activities are those that are not essential to your daily life or your job, but activities that you chose to do. For example, playing sports, exercising, or going for a walk. In this study, ideal amounts of activity cut stroke risk by 29%, and even low levels of activity cut risk by 18%. They say that everyone can benefit from whatever movement they can fit into their regular routine. Do what you enjoy and are willing to keep doing. Carol just discovered an indoor swimming pool a few blocks down from our house. We had no idea that it was there. She spotted a sign for the pool and talked me into checking it out with her. We went on a weekday and were surprised how many people were in or around the pool. Those people apparently enjoy swimming and have found a place to do it any day of the week. That's what we encourage readers to do. Find something you enjoy doing and a place to do it. If my father had done something like that, he might have been with us longer. He enjoyed owning and driving sports cars. He also enjoyed taking me out to the mesa for target practice. I was really good with a 45 pistol because I was strong enough to hold it steady. We did a lot of things like that, but nothing that would have helped him avoid the stroke that took his life. I'm doing my best to keep moving, and encourage readers to do the same.
