Petroglyph National Monument
Photos by Bud Bass
Matt and Bud wanted to drive out and see the Petroglyphs (shown above), something we haven't done in a very long time. We had forgotten what an amazing terrain it is, with a mountain of huge rocks with Petroglyphs by Indian people and later Spanish explorers. We are told that the five dormant volcanic cones show how a series of eruptions over 100,000 years ago formed the basalt boulders that tumbled down to the escarpment's edge, later providing an ideal material for carving Puebloan and Spanish Petroglyphs. The National Park Service says that many of the Indian images were etched 300-700 years ago, and that the Spanish Petroglyphs were etched 200-300 years ago. If you are ever coming our way from the west, we encourage you to check in with the Park Service just off the Interstate. * * * Finally, there are four hiking trails, all a short distance from the information center. Three trails allow for Petroglyoph viewing and one does not. The trails range from one to four miles roundtrip--with a degree of effort from easy to moderately hard. Trail guides are available at the information center.
Bud Bass, who took all of the photos above, was fearless, bouncing from one position to another. I was more cautious, taking my time and watching each step. Those rocks are very hard. Makes me wonder how ancient man managed to hang on to draw on the rocks. The markings may have a religious significance of some kind. If we go again, we should have a trail guide explain what we are seeing. In any event, it was a wonderful experience. We recommend it to any one in our part of the country March 1, 2024 Comment on this article: FEEDBACK Ripped Enterprises, P.O.
