Unprocessed Plant-Based Foods Lower Parkinson's Disease Risk

Apples are an Interesting Example

Two of our friends were diagnosed with Parkinson's shortly before they died. In one case Parkinson's had little if anything to do with the death, but it was apparently involved in the other.

This peaked my interest in Parkinson's Disease, which causes progressive motor and cognitive disability. It impairs the ability to function properly, mentally and physically.

A recent study in the December issue of Tufts Health & Nutrition Letter caught my attention because it found that unprocessed fruit and vegetables were associated with a 22 percent lower risk of developing Parkinson's disease, while a processed plant-based diet was found to be associated with a 38 percent higher risk.

That's good news, because we eat a balanced diet of whole foods, which makes us full and satisfied without over-shooting our calorie needs. You'll find more details on our Philosophy and Diet pages.

An example is the apple and applesauce. For the apple you have to bite off a piece, chew it, and then swallow it piece by piece, while applesauce just slides down your throat. You are far more likely to wolf down applesauce than bites of apple. It takes work to eat an apple, while applesauce is practically effortless.

Let's take a closer look at apples.

Apples

Apples are my favorite snack food. I eat them practically every day. (Carol warns that applesauce usually has sugar added.)

You've probably heard the age-old saying, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away."

Although eating an apple isn't a cure all, it is good for your health, containing a type of soluble fiber (pectin) which helps bowel regularity and may help lower LDL cholesterol.

Wikipedia tells us that a raw apple is 86% water and 14% carbs, with a small amount of fat and protein, supplying about 50 calories.

WebMd adds that scientists give apples credit for helping your heart, bones, brain and more.

If you want something that's good and good for you, make it an apple.
