THE FATHER OF AEROBICS STILL TRAINS FIVE DAYS A WEEK AT 92 CNN reports that Dr. Kenneth Cooper does both strength and aerobic training. I first learned of Dr. Cooper about 45 years ago from Dr. George Sheehan's articles in Runner's World. I met him in person some years later when Arnie Jensen MD made a trip to Albuquerque to invite Carol and I to come to the Cooper Clinic. What I remember most is that I lasted a minute more than Dr. Cooper on his infamous treadmill fitness test. I lasted 28 minutes. You'll find a photo of him watching me on the treadmill in our book LEAN FOR LIFE.
This is another photo taken by Justin Joseph at the same time. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to tell him that his book Aerobics got Carol and I started jogging. It delights me to read in CNN that his training regimen now includes weight training, a form of exercise that he had failed to find of value in his landmark book. Obviously, he later found value in weight training. * * * The purpose of Dr Jensen's trip to Albuquerque was to show that weight trainers are often aerobically fit as well as strong. Matching Dr. Cooper's time on the treadmill was just what Arnie was hoping for.
Another photo taken at the same time, showing that weight trainers are flexible; that the muscle bound myth is just that, a myth. * * * Carol and I were delighted to meet Dr. Cooper again during our last visit to The Cooper Clinic a few years back. He struggled to come up with my name, but he is known around the world as the Father of Aerobics. May 1, 2024 Comment on this article: FEEDBACK
