Morning Coffee, Longer Life The April 2025 issue of Harvard Health Letter reports that morning coffee is linked to a longer life. The timing may affect your longevity according to a study published online January 8, 2025 in the European Heart Journal. Scientists at Harvard and other institutions evaluated the health and self reported habits of more than 40,000 adults who were followed for about a decade. They found two patterns: morning or all days coffee drinking. Compared with those who didn't drink any coffee, those who drank it in the morning were 16% less likely to die for any reason and 31% less likely to die from heart disease, with greatest benefits coming from at least two cups. There weren't any risk reduction for those who drank coffee throughout the day, compared to those who didn't drink coffee. The authors speculate that the chemicals in coffee might be most beneficial in a concentrated amount in the morning, when inflammation levels are usually highest, rather than smaller amounts spread throughout the day as inflammation levels fall. * * * I started drinking coffee when I was in law school and needed something to keep alert late into the night. I paid the price the next morning when I often had to step outside to wake up while taking tests. (Carol never drinks coffee.) Now I drink coffee from time to time--nothing regular. In any event, it is good to know that coffee can be good for you. I've found that coffee wakes you up and then lets you down. Interestingly, no one drank coffee at our house when I was young, but my father later drank coffee during the day while he was seeing patients. I know because I saw the coffee cup in his office when I would drop in to discuss something or other. He always had time for me and I almost always followed his advice. I remember telling him that I was being urged to run for president of the National Physique Committee. He said "don't" do it and I didn't.
Laszlo caught me with a cup in my hands. Coffee? Milk? Water? Don't know.
