Clarence at 85

Here we go again.

This is the 10th year, starting at 76, where we’ve assessed and reported on my everyday condition. No dieting or increase in training volume, every day condition. The way I look and feel from week to week.

Last year I detailed my back problem and how I train around it, along with our diet: https://cbass.com/clarencebass84.html

We’ll take it from there.

Weekly weighing shows my bodyweight to be unchanged, fluctuating up and down a pound or 2.

the As the photo above shows, my legs are as ripped as ever. My abs, however, are a little smoother. (Wonderfully flat and muscular compared to what we see in the waiting rooms.)

As related in our feature article for this month, I get up every morning striving to stay lean, fit, and productive.

I begin every weekday with a tour of our tri-level house (down and back up the stairs) combined with my Morning Motion routine, which includes moving all parts of my body, balancing, resistance band movements, and marching in place.

Other than my gimpy lower back, my biggest problem is burning in my hands from a lifetime of training. I use Hookers to save my hands, but there's no way to train without using my hands. They feel okay during the workout, but the burning shows up during the night and next day.

It's a problem I never expected, but I'm learning to deal with it.

Carol and I walk in the parks near our home most evenings. She walks on the sidewalk and I walk on the grass to lessen the stress on my lower back. We rotate from flat to hilly parks to keep our walks interesting. (I'm walking much better than during the initial flair up.)

We alternate between our home and office gyms to train our whole body. That allows us to do different exercises for every body part, making the training more interesting and productive.

I do a general warm-up and then one hard set (just short of failure) for each exercise.

Our workouts take about an hour.

I do controlled bench squats (with one or two weight belts) up to 70 reps, both at home and at the office. I begin with leg curls and leg extensions at the office to pre-exhaust my legs.

At home, I follow bench squats by climbing our stairs—12 round trips is my best so far. I don't use the hand railing, which makes it harder and requires more balance.

Both routines set my legs on fire.

That weekly routine keeps my training interesting and effective--setting off alarm bells early in the week and allows me to recover in time for the next Saturday workout.

May not seem like enough, but it works for me. Keep in mind that no routine will work unless you enjoy doing it, week after week.

I’ve been training since the 5th grade, so I should know.

We’ll end with new photos of the Bass pose, training intensity in our home gym, venturing into the foothills near our home, and a torso shot.

 And

Will be interesting to see what my 86th year brings. As cellist Pablo Casals might say, that's not young. In fact, it's almost 90.

Attitude Prevails

You continue to look amazing and are stopping the aging process dead on its tracks!

I have a friend who can’t play his guitar now that his hands are damaged. So, maybe it’s a blessing that your hand injury is manageable? I really believe you can make a difference because you have the right attitude.

Bass Pose at 85!

I don’t think that there is any other 85-year-old out there who is stripping down to posing trunks and baring their abs for all to see. You can still pull off the “Bass pose” at age 85!

Weight Training and Cardio

You're quite an example for a healthy lifestyle with focus on weight training and cardio. Keep it up, and thank you.

Been following you from the 80s. Your photos from that era are timeless. They'll be up there with likes of Eugen Sandow's famous poses.

Your Blueprint

At 60, I'm still training hard and I credit you for forging the path that I have followed. I don't do exactly what you do, but your blueprint is always my guideline. As you've said many times "make your workout your own."
