Cycling Saves Knees--and More

The August 2024 Cleveland Clinic ARTHRITIS ADVISOR features research finding that regular bicycling is linked to less knee pain.

A study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise reveals that people who participated in regular bicycling over their lifetime had a lower level of frequent knee pain and arthritis.

The researchers concluded that "bicycling may be favorable to knee health and should be encouraged."

Lead researcher Grace H. Lo says "The big take away from this observational study is that if people are concerned about knee pain later in life, biking may serve as a way to prevent this and that the more often they do it throughout their lives, the higher the probability of knee health."

Writing about the study in the May 20, 2024 issue of NPR, Allison Aubrey observes that we are in the middle of "National Bike Month" and that cycling enthusiasts love to talk up the benefits of cycling.

"A substantial body of evidence supports the health benefits of cycling, everything from strengthening the immune system to boosting the likelihood of living longer.

"Now, a new study finds people who are in the habit of riding a bike are significantly less likely to have osteoarthritis and experience pain in their knees by age 65, compared to people who don't bike."

The low impact nature of biking goes a long way.

If I had known all of that earlier, my bike might not be in gathering dust in our storage room.

While it's a bit late for me, many of our readers might want to consider buying one of the wonderful bikes now available.

Add cycling to your training program, but do it carefully.  Remember that the car always wins.

There are many ways to train and live long and well.

Cycling has moved up on my list of training options.
